Corytophanidae – Casquehead Lizards
The Corytophanidae are a family of iguanids (Iguania) with only nine species occurring from central Mexico to northern South America. The so-called basiliscs (Basilicus), casquehead iguanas (Laemanctus) and helmeted iguanas (Corytophanes) have well-developed crests they use to threaten opponents and to impress. Corytophanidae are forest animals, but some are ground-dwellers. With one exception they lay eggs. They feed on insects and other small animals. They are well-suited for captivity as long as you encounter their quite shy lifestyle with enough space in the vivarium.
Corytophanidae – Basilisken
Die Corytophanidae sind eine Familie der Leguanartigen (Iguania) mit nur neun Arten, die von Zentralmexiko bis zum nördlichen Südamerika vorkommt. Die sogenannten Basilisken (Basilicus), Kronenbasilisken (Laemanctus) und Helmleguane (Corytophanes) haben in Kopfnähe Hautfortsätze, die sie zum Drohen einsetzen. Corytophanidae sind Waldbewohner, allerdings leben sie teilweise auf dem Boden. Mit einer Ausnahme sind alle Arten eierlegend. Sie fressen in erster Linie Insekten und andere kleinere Tiere. Für das Terrarium sind sie vor allem dann geeignet, wenn man ihrer recht scheuen Lebensweise mit ausreichend Platz begegnet.
