Gekkonidae – True Geckoes

Currently around 1,000 known species belong to the true geckoes. Through their great adaptability the Gekkonidae have spread worldwide and colonize temperate climates as well as the tropics and deserts. They are best known to the general public due to the ability of many species (lamellae geckoes) to move with adhesive lamellae on vertical walls or even ceilings. The claw geckoes lack this ability, however. The true geckos reproduce by laying eggs, the females of most species lay two eggs several times a year. Among them are animals of up to 40 cm total length. All bigger species have been wiped out by mankind during the 19th century.

The principal advantages of geckoes for the reptile hobby: They are relatively small on average, so they thrive even in smaller vivariums, they are variable and can be bred relatively easy. There's very good literature about geckoes mainly thanks to some German authors. The variety in colours and shapes is impressive considering the small size. The downside, if you do not just want to keep geckoes of the genera Phelsuma, or Lygodactylus: Most species live very hidden or are crepuscular or nocturnal. There are also some problematic species among the Gekkonidae that should not necessarily be the ones for a beginner. Almost all species feed mainly on insects and other invertebrates, but many also take fruit puree, artificial diets, or even small vertebrae as food.

Gekkonidae – Echte Geckos
